MISSION

To plan, promote, and evaluate all courses in the department of Religious Studies, including, Christian Education, and Intercultural Studies, using methods that result in the best learning for students.

VISION

The Department of Religious Studies offers Christian workers quality Bible and theological training for working in the environmental realities of today’s world—training that is biblically sound and academically excellent.

The Importance of the Study of Religion

If I went back to college today, I think I would probably major in comparative religion, because that's how integrated it is in everything that we are working on and deciding and thinking about in life today.” - John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, 2013

As Christian leaders, we are tasked with understanding how religious beliefs guide decisions in a global context. The diversity and complexity of beliefs require us to have a strong academic foundation suffused with religion. And as Mr. Secretary Kerry alludes to, this foundation will help foster working relationships built on religious commonalities.

For me, Kerry’s statement supports the BHU mission statement of developing relevant Christian leaders for ministry and marketplace. For ministry, we must understand the foundational tenets of Christianity and how to apply them. For marketplace, we must use that foundational knowledge to enhance our understanding that religion is intimately woven into every micro and macro facet of our being. All moral, political, sociological, economic and environmental choices are interdependent and interconnected with our religious beliefs.

Religion is many things to many people, and understanding this fundamental principle is paramount in developing into an effective leader. BHU's Religious Studies Department provides a look into the broad guidelines for what makes up people’s belief systems, with an emphasis on Christianity. This layered foundation will challenge and equip you to be a relevant Christian leader in both ministry and the global marketplace.
