Cecil Murphey

New York Times’ bestselling author and international speaker Cecil (Cec) Murphey has written or cowritten more than 135 books, including the runaway bestseller 90 Minutes in Heaven (with Don Piper) and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (with Dr. Ben Carson). His books have sold in the millions, been translated into more than 40 languages, and have brought hope and encouragement to countless people around the world.
In addition to his many books, Cecil has written hundreds of articles that have appeared in a variety of publications. He stays busy as a professional writer and enjoys traveling to speak on topics such as writing, spiritual and personal growth, caregiving, significant aging, healthy living, and healing from abuse.
Some of his more recent releases include: Stolen: The True Story of a Sex Trafficking Survivor (with Katariina Rosenblatt, PhD); Bloodline: The John Turnipseed Story (with John Turnipseed); A Walk through the Dark: How My Husband’s 90 Minutes in Heaven Deepened My Faith for a Lifetime (with Eva Piper); I Believe in Heaven and I Believe in Healing; Writer to Writer; Not Quite Healed: 40 Truths for Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse; and Saying Goodbye: Facing the Loss of a Loved One. He recently signed a contract with Tyndale House Publishers to write the story of Mariam Ibraheem, a Sudanese woman beaten and condemned to death because she refused to recant her Christian faith.

Cecil has coauthored a number of autobiographies and books for well-known personalities. The all-star lineup includes renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson (Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story—which has been made into a movie starring Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr.—and Think Big); singer B.J. Thomas (In Tune); Franklin Graham (Rebel with a Cause, for which he won the 1995 Gold Medallion Award); and Norman Vaughn, the last survivor of Admiral Byrd’s Antarctica Expedition (With Byrd at the Bottom of the World).

90 Minutes in Heaven (with Don Piper) has sold more than 7 million copies and was the catalyst for several follow-up books. The book stayed on the New York Times’ bestseller list for more than five years and was included on USA Today’s list of top 150 bestselling books in the last 15 years. A full-length feature film, starring Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth, released to theaters in September 2015.

As a professional writer who made a commitment to do whatever he could to help other writers, he’s received numerous honors and much esteem over the years. In April 2009, the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) acknowledged Cecil with the Extraordinary Service Award, one of their most prestigious awards. This award reflects the great respect the ASJA membership holds for Murphey and his extraordinary service to other writers. In 2007, Cecil received the first Lifetime Achievement Award from The Advanced Writers and Speakers Association. He was recognized not only for his excellent writing but also for his selfless mentoring of other writers. In June 2016, he’ll receive the first National Award for the Encouragement of Writing during the Southern Christian Writers Conference. The purpose of the award is to recognize people who have been important in encouraging others in their writing ambitions and careers.

Prior to launching his career as a full-time writer and speaker, Cecil served as pastor for 14 years in Metro Atlanta, as a volunteer hospital chaplain for ten years, and was a missionary in Kenya for six. He holds bachelor’s degrees in education and religious education, as well as master’s degrees in education and theology. Cecil was awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature from The Richmond Virginia Seminary for his contributions to the writing field.
